Renovation & Building Updates
Work on the Clubhouse kitchen renovation is well underway, and several important behind-the-scenes improvements are taking place alongside the remodel. Check out our early mock-up photo above. While the kitchen renovation is in motion, we learned we’re able to make it even better! Stay tuned for our final photos in the coming months.
As recommended in the 2019 seismic evaluation of the Clubhouse, structural upgrades have been completed in the basement. Beams have been mechanically fastened together and secured to posts where needed, with several posts replaced and others reinforced with new concrete bases. These improvements address key areas of seismic insufficiency identified in the report, many of which are typical of early 1900s wood-frame buildings.
Because the Clubhouse features large expanses of doors and windows, there are limited opportunities to add traditional plywood shear walls. However, as part of the kitchen remodel, plywood shear walls will be installed in areas where it is feasible to do so.
This retrofitting work was made possible by the basement being fully cleared for kitchen construction, making it an ideal moment to tackle these long-needed upgrades. During the process, water drainage into the basement was discovered and is now being re-directed to improve overall building conditions.
Members may notice small modifications around the Clubhouse as ongoing projects are completed to bring the building into closer compliance with current American Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. These changes are being thoughtfully integrated to preserve the character of the historic building while improving accessibility.
Construction planning is in place to ensure the Clubhouse remains protected and presentable during the renovation period. The building will continue to be clean and welcoming for Saturday docent tours, with water service maintained so restrooms remain fully functional throughout this phase of construction.
