Big Wave Bench

Tucked into the playground area of Old Mill Park, the Big Wave Bench is a whimsical and welcoming presence, part sculpture, part gathering place, and entirely rooted in the spirit of Mill Valley.

Created by Bolinas artist and arborist Chuck Oakander, the bench was gifted to the City of Mill Valley by the Outdoor Art Club in 2019. Carved from a single tree trunk, the piece reflects Oakander’s signature approach, transforming natural materials into functional works of art that feel both organic and intentional.

The bench sits near the playground, across from the Old Mill, where it offers a place to pause, watch children play, or simply enjoy the park’s redwood setting. Its flowing, wave-like form blends seamlessly into the landscape, making it feel as though it has always belonged there.

The installation was part of the City’s Art in Public Places Program, which highlights locally made, environmentally sustainable, and functional artwork in shared community spaces. The Outdoor Art Club’s contribution was made possible through a grant facilitated by the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce and its Enjoy Mill Valley Fund.

The Big Wave Bench is one of several artist-designed benches introduced throughout Mill Valley as part of a broader effort to bring art into everyday public spaces. Alongside other installations, including a metal Asymmetric Art Bench by Colin Selig, it reflects the City’s commitment to creativity, sustainability, and community connection.
