Beauty Added to a Historic Base
One of our 2025 Community Impact grantees is Mill Valley’s Beautification Brigade. The Brigade
was awarded $2,000 to complete a mosaic project that will transform the former flagpole base at
the southern end of Depot Plaza (across from Peet’s) into a beautiful seating area. While the OAC
funded the original base many years ago, the flag has since been relocated, leaving behind an
unattractive concrete slab. Supporting this transformation was a perfect way for the OAC to
continue its investment in the site.
Council member, Brigade leader and OAC member Caroline Joachim led a ribbon-cutting ceremony
on September 15 to recognize artist Carol Lancour and the many contributors who brought the
project to completion. The mosaic now illustrates eight stunning Mill Valley scenes around the base,
while a black line across the top marks the starting line for the annual Dipsea Race. Several OAC
members attended the ceremony, including Lydia Maroevich, Joan Murray, and Teresa Rea (who
also serve on the Beautification Brigade Committee), as well as OAC Community Grants liaison
Wendy Crowe.
Be sure to stop by to admire the scenes, rest on the surrounding benches, look up at the towering
redwoods, and enjoy this lovely new addition to downtown Mill Valley.
